History
Kings Rehabilitation Center was organized in 1965 by parents and community members who were concerned about young adults with disabilities and their future following Special Education classes in public schools. Kings Rehabilitation Center was established to provide training, work experience and social skills to enable individuals with developmental disabilities to compete in the employment world. That dream of independence and empowerment began with five clients and one staff member.
This citizen group worked through details to establish a board of directors; drawing up articles of incorporation; applying for start up grants; finding a suitable location for the program and naming the organization.
Originally meeting in downtown Hanford they evidentially moved to their present location at 490 E. Hanford Armona Road in 1969. By 1993 Kings Rehabilitation Center had added a building for the adult developmental program. Over the forty plus years we have grown from the original five clients to now serving 165 clients with a staff of 55.
Kings Rehabilitation Center's acquisition of the 36-acre soccer field facility occurred in 1999. The soccer field serves the Hanford Youth Soccer League, Kings County Special Olympics, City of Hanford Recreation Department and T.O.P. Soccer, a soccer program devoted to youth with mental and physical challenges.
In 2009, a newly administration building was christened with future expansion planed for two new buildings over the next five years.
